Chinese Carmakers Expand European Market Share Despite EU Tariff Barriers

Published on

Chinese automotive manufacturers have significantly expanded their presence in Europe, capturing an estimated 9.5 percent of the region’s passenger car market despite higher European Union tariffs on battery electric vehicles imported from China.

The strong performance highlights the industry’s ability to adapt to changing trade policies through strategic product diversification and increased investment in local manufacturing. While the EU introduced additional duties on Chinese battery electric vehicles, plug in hybrid vehicles have remained outside the scope of the measures, allowing Chinese manufacturers to strengthen their position in one of the world’s most competitive automotive markets.

According to a report by the publication, written by Nick Carey, Chinese vehicle exports to Europe rose sharply during the first half of 2026, driven by strong demand for plug in hybrid models and expanding manufacturing partnerships within Europe. Leading manufacturers including BYD, Geely, Chery Automobile, SAIC Motor, NIO, Xpeng and Leapmotor have accelerated their regional expansion through factory investments, strategic alliances and local vehicle assembly. The report also noted that Volkswagen Group Chief Executive Officer Oliver Blume has urged European policymakers to review tariff arrangements, arguing that the current framework places European manufacturers at a competitive disadvantage.

Chinese manufacturers are also establishing production facilities across Europe to strengthen regional supply chains and reduce reliance on imports. Investments in Spain, Hungary and other strategic locations are expected to enhance manufacturing capacity while supporting long term market growth.

Meanwhile, the United Kingdom has emerged as an important destination for Chinese automotive brands, as it has not imposed additional tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports. This has enabled companies to introduce both mainstream and premium models while expanding their dealer networks and brand recognition.

Industry analysts believe the rapid expansion of Chinese automakers will intensify competition across the European automotive sector, encouraging greater innovation, competitive pricing and accelerated investment in electric and hybrid vehicle technologies.
