The Sri Lanka–Benelux Business Council (SLBBC) of The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce has held its 31st Annual General Meeting, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening trade and investment relations between Sri Lanka and the Benelux region.
Addressing the gathering as Chief Guest, Netherlands Ambassador to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Wiebe de Boer highlighted the continuing importance of the Benelux union in European economic integration and its potential role in connecting Sri Lankan exporters with the Port of Rotterdam, a major gateway to European markets.
The Ambassador confirmed that Sri Lanka’s GSP+ access remains in place until 2029, with an opportunity to reapply under a new regime, while expressing hope that the country could eventually progress towards a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement with the European Union. He also drew attention to bureaucratic challenges affecting entrepreneurs and foreign investors.
SLBBC President Farhath Amith highlighted opportunities for deeper cooperation in renewable energy, agriculture and agro-processing, floriculture, eco-tourism, healthcare and the coconut industry. He also emphasised the need to accelerate Geographical Indication certification for Sri Lankan agricultural products to expand their potential in European markets.
Amith was re-elected President for the 2026/2027 term, while Shaameel Mohideen and P.M. Abeysekara were reappointed Senior Vice President and Vice President respectively.
The Council’s renewed leadership and trade agenda are expected to support stronger commercial engagement between Sri Lankan businesses and the Benelux economies while creating new avenues for exports, investment and international partnerships.
