Sri Lanka Unveils Major Transport Upgrades

Published on

The Government has commenced two landmark transport projects under the Clean Sri Lanka program, aiming to modernise public infrastructure while preserving heritage. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake inaugurated the Rs. 425 million redevelopment of Colombo Central Bus Terminal, its first complete facelift in 60 years, scheduled for completion by April 2026. The project is supported by the Sri Lanka Air Force, CMC, CEB, NWSDB, RDA, UDA, and private partners.

Simultaneously, the renovation of Maradana Railway Station was launched under the Dream Destination initiative, part of a broader plan to upgrade 100 stations through PPPs. Transport Minister Bimal Rathnayake revealed plans to establish 50 multimodal transport centres by 2029, with 15 to be completed next year. He emphasised that modern, safe, and affordable public transport is essential for economic growth, improved connectivity, and enhanced tourism. The initiatives balance modernisation with heritage, ensuring accessibility for all citizens.
