Giving every role her best without expecting perfection is a conviction that shapes Dilushi Mendis’s approach to life and leadership.
A Chartered Architect and Interior Designer, she is the Founder of DM Interior Studio, Styling Deco by DM and Cafe Delizo. Her responsibilities as an entrepreneur, mother and wife have deepened her patience, strengthened her personal confidence and taught her to recognise the human stories behind business decisions. That sensitivity also informs her design philosophy: spaces should express identity, evoke emotion and support everyday life. From transforming leftover factory materials into décor to collaborating with Sri Lankan craftsmen, university students and differently-abled artisans, she connects creativity with opportunity.
Her three brands extend this thinking across architecture, styling and hospitality, each offering a different way to experience meaningful design. In the conversation that follows, she explores how listening, trusting others and embracing imperfection help her build businesses with lasting purpose.
Q: What are the different ‘crowns’ you wear, and how have they shaped your leadership?
Every crown represents a different part of my life. I am an architect, a designer, an entrepreneur, a mother and a wife. Each role brings its own responsibilities, challenges and joys.
My journey has taught me that being a woman does not mean choosing just one role. You can pursue dreams, build a career, care for your family and make time for things you love.
It is not always easy. Sometimes everything happens at once, and difficult decisions become necessary. I have learnt to be patient, trust myself and keep moving forward.
These roles have made me a more understanding leader. I listen to people, respect different opinions and recognise that behind every business are human beings with their own stories.
The beauty of wearing many crowns is not doing everything perfectly. It is giving your best to each role while staying true to yourself.
Q: How do you translate a client’s story or business vision into a meaningful space?
I believe a space should always tell a story. Good design goes beyond beautiful furniture, colours or finishes. It concerns how people feel when they enter a space and how they experience it daily.
When meeting clients, I try to understand their lifestyles, personalities, dreams and expectations. Some know exactly what they want. Others understand how they want to feel but cannot express it in design terms. That is where our work begins.
We translate those feelings into materials, lighting, colours, furniture and atmosphere.
At DM Interior Studio, we work from the initial concept through to manufacturing and construction. This allows us to focus on details and bring the finished design closer to our original vision.
A successful project is one where the client walks in, feels comfortable and says, “This is exactly what I wanted.” That feeling makes my work meaningful.
Q: What inspired your three brands, and how do you connect their individual identities?
These brands were never part of a single business plan. They grew organically, shaped by my journey, challenges and things I felt were missing.
DM Interior Studio is my foundation. As a Chartered Architect and Interior Designer, I see it as the place where everything begins: the thinking, planning, functionality and soul of a space.
While working on projects, I sometimes struggled to find décor pieces that complemented the spaces I created. I wanted pieces that were personal, meaningful and connected to each design’s story.
Styling Deco by DM began with experiments using leftover materials from my furniture factory, transforming waste into beautiful, unique pieces. Today, I collaborate with Sri Lankan craftsmen and create opportunities for university students and differently-abled artisans to express their creativity. The brand combines design with sustainability, local heritage and social impact.
Cafe Delizo takes that experience further. Set within the garden and traditional surroundings of our décor space, it connects design, nature, food and hospitality.
I wanted people to experience beautiful design rather than simply see it. Delizo offers a place where they can slow down, connect and enjoy themselves.
Each brand has its own identity, but all share one philosophy: design should have meaning, tell a story and create an emotional connection.
Together, the brands reflect different sides of who I am, bringing creativity, people, purpose and experience into something meaningful beyond three separate businesses.
Q: What challenges have taught you most about resilience, trust and leadership?
One major challenge has been turning creative ideas into successful businesses while managing budgets, deadlines, staff and client expectations.
A good design idea is only the beginning. It must work in the real world, within a budget, while maintaining quality and satisfying clients.
Difficult days and unexpected problems have taught me that business is about how you respond when things go wrong.
I have learnt to believe in myself and stand by my decisions. Not everyone understands your vision immediately. Sometimes you must be patient and demonstrate it through your work.
Trusting my team, communicating openly and accepting support are equally important. Resilience means learning from difficult experiences and continuing with a clearer mind. Leadership means taking responsibility and moving forward together.
Q: How do you protect your wellbeing, and what advice would you give aspiring women entrepreneurs?
Finding balance is something I am still learning. Family time, simple moments and activities that inspire me help me recharge. Stepping away from work can also bring fresh ideas.
My advice is simple: believe in your abilities and start small. Learn your industry, understand your finances, build relationships and work hard. Passion needs discipline, patience and a willingness to learn.
Avoid comparing your journey with someone else’s. Stay true to your values and give yourself permission to grow. You need not be perfect in every role to feel proud of who you are becoming.
