Sri Lanka’s export sector continued its positive momentum during the first five months of 2026, with total exports surpassing US$ 7.3 billion, reflecting the country’s strengthening external sector and improving global competitiveness.
According to provisional figures released by Sri Lanka Customs and estimates by the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), combined merchandise and services exports reached US$ 7,393.39 million from January to May 2026, representing a 7.56% year-on-year increase compared with the corresponding period in 2025.
Merchandise exports amounted to US$ 5,758.44 million, recording growth of 7.63%, while services exports rose 7.31% to US$ 1,634.95 million, highlighting the growing contribution of knowledge-based industries to Sri Lanka’s export earnings.
Export performance accelerated in May 2026, with merchandise exports increasing 18.25% year on year to US$ 1,223.49 million, while services exports climbed 18.67% to an estimated US$ 347.15 million. Total exports for the month reached US$ 1,570.64 million, marking an impressive 18.34% increase over May 2025.
Commenting on the performance, Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board, said the results demonstrate the resilience and adaptability of Sri Lankan exporters despite global economic challenges. He noted that the recently launched National Export Development Plan (NEDP) 2026–2030 would further strengthen market access, promote innovation and enhance exporter capabilities, positioning Sri Lanka as a globally competitive export hub.
Key sectors driving growth included Apparel and Textiles, Coconut-based Products, Rubber and Rubber-based Products, Electrical and Electronic Components, Food and Beverages, ICT/BPM services, and Gems and Jewellery.
