Q: Can you share your professional journey, starting as a management trainee, your experience at Hayleys Advantis, and what motivated you to start OCEAN 7 Logistics in 2019?
Right after my A/Ls in 2000, I started as a management trainee at an export company, where I learned the basics of exports and logistics. In 2004, I joined Hayleys Advantis and built my career there over 14 years. I gained extensive experience in logistics, including airfreight, sea freight, and marketing strategies. This inspired me to start Ocean 7 Logistics in 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic. As a Grade A freight forwarder, the company was established to serve customers and share my knowledge within the industry.
Q: How did you come up with the name OCEAN 7 for your company?
I wanted a name with global appeal. Being an athlete in school, I loved the Olympic logo, which represents five continents. The idea struck me to combine “OCEAN” with the seven oceans of the world, aligning perfectly with the Olympic theme and international relevance.
Q: What were the major challenges you faced while establishing OCEAN 7, and how did you overcome them?
Starting just before the COVID-19 pandemic was the biggest challenge. The restrictions limited travel and required us to operate from home. My experience from the past 15 years helped me navigate this environment. Securing financial capital was another hurdle. However, I found a trustworthy partner, Mr. Kolitha Wickramasinghe, who encouraged me to start the company and supported me financially.
Q: OCEAN 7 Logistics has won multiple awards. What do these achievements mean to you and the company?
The first major recognition was the 45 under 45 Leadership Excellence Award organised by Global CEO Forum, which was a milestone for both me and the company.
Recently, we received the Contribution Award from the JC Trans Network, one of the largest logistics network globally. These awards have boosted our credibility and strengthened relationships with international partners.
Q: Your company specialises in the US, Canada, and Mexico trade lanes. What sets OCEAN 7 apart in these competitive markets?
We focus on value addition, such as last-mile delivery through partnerships with truckers in the US, Canada, and Mexico. We are also FMC Bond registered and file AMS directly with US Customs. My 20 years of expertise in these markets, coupled with our competitive rates and technical knowledge, make Ocean 7 a trusted name in the industry.
Q: What are your goals for OCEAN 7 Logistics in the coming years, and how do you plan to contribute to Sri Lanka’s economy?
Our strategy is to directly approach customers in the US, Canada, and Mexico, bypassing agents. This ensures direct foreign currency inflows to Sri Lanka. We’re also investing in technology, offering customers value-added services like container tracking and BL management through our website. These initiatives aim to differentiate us and strengthen our contribution to the national economy.
Q: As a leader, what are your core beliefs, and how have they shaped the culture of OCEAN 7?
I believe in two key principles: be simple and be fast. Being fast allows us to seize opportunities, while simplicity ensures clarity and efficiency. I encourage my team to follow these principles, and they’ve been integral to our success. Personally, I wake up at 4:30 AM to stay ahead and manage time zones effectively, which helps me maintain focus and productivity.
Q: What is your advice to young entrepreneurs?
Be creative, build knowledge in your field, and don’t fear making decisions. Failure is part of the journey, but persistence and adaptability will lead to success.
Q: What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
During a training session at Toyota Lanka, organised by Global CEO Forum and Toyota Lanka (Pvt) Ltd I learned the importance of continuously serving customers. In the service industry, customer satisfaction is paramount, and this advice has been a guiding principle for me.
