Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) has reported strong operational performance for the first six months of 2026, reflecting the continued recovery and expansion of Sri Lanka’s aviation and tourism sectors.
According to the airport’s mid year operational update, 4,748,481 passenger movements were recorded between January and June 2026, highlighting sustained demand for international travel and improved air connectivity. During the same period, the airport handled 30,659 aircraft movements, demonstrating the steady growth of airline operations serving Sri Lanka.
BIA also recorded 424,856 transit passenger movements, underlining its growing role as a regional aviation gateway connecting international travellers through Colombo.
Tourism continued its positive momentum, with 1,146,573 tourist arrivals recorded during the first half of the year. The figures reflect Sri Lanka’s increasing appeal as a travel destination and the important contribution of aviation to supporting the country’s tourism industry and broader economic recovery.
Airport authorities noted that BIA continues to connect people, cultures and business opportunities while playing a vital role in strengthening Sri Lanka’s position as a regional aviation and tourism hub. The encouraging performance also demonstrates the resilience of the country’s aviation sector amid growing international travel demand.
