The Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), in collaboration with the Import Promotion Desk (IPD) Germany, has taken another significant step toward empowering export-oriented women entrepreneurs by launching Phase II of the EDB-IPD Women-Led Exports Capacity-Building Programme. This initiative aims to further enhance the export potential of women-led businesses in Sri Lanka’s agricultural sector by equipping them with essential skills, technical expertise, and international market exposure.
Since its inception in December 2023, the programme has played a pivotal role in strengthening the capabilities of women entrepreneurs in the agri-food sector, helping them meet international standards and establish trade connections with European markets. The success of Phase I laid the foundation for an even more impactful second phase, during which an additional 20 women-led agribusinesses will receive targeted training, ongoing mentorship, and structured guidance on navigating the complexities of global trade.
The official launch event was attended by His Excellency Dr Felix Neumann, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany; Ms Angie Martinez, Expert in Sourcing & Markets from IPD Germany; and key representatives from the EDB, including Chairman/CEO Mr Mangala Wijesinghe, Director General Mrs Champika D. Dharmasena, and Additional Director General – Development Ms Anoma Premathilake.
German Ambassador Dr Felix Neumann reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to promoting women’s economic empowerment and fostering sustainable trade partnerships. He applauded the ongoing collaboration between the EDB and IPD in building the capacity of Sri Lankan women entrepreneurs and providing them with the necessary tools to succeed in the global marketplace.
In his remarks, EDB Chairman/CEO Mr Mangala Wijesinghe highlighted the vital role of women entrepreneurs in driving economic growth and innovation. He emphasised that structured export support, long-term mentorship, and market access are crucial in ensuring that women-led businesses not only enter international markets but also sustain and expand their operations. He outlined the export targets set for the next five years and urged participants to seize these opportunities to drive Sri Lanka’s exports to greater heights.
Ms Angie Martinez from IPD Germany underscored the importance of market access and continuous mentorship in ensuring export success. “Building strong trade linkages with international buyers is key, but it must go hand in hand with ongoing capacity development. Through this programme, we are not just preparing women entrepreneurs for exports—we are preparing them for long-term sustainability in global trade,” she remarked.
With a strong emphasis on long-term business development, access to international buyers, and continuous support, the EDB-IPD Women-Led Exports Programme is set to play a transformative role in integrating more Sri Lankan women entrepreneurs into global trade networks, making a lasting impact on the country’s export sector.
