Colombo, 24th February 2025 – A workshop titled “EXPORTING FROM SRI LANKA TO JAPAN: GUIDE & GOOD PRACTICES” was successfully held at the Hotel NH Collection, Colombo, on 24th February 2025. The event was organised through a collaboration between the International Trade Centre (ITC) Geneva, the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL). The programme was funded by the Japanese Government and aimed to create awareness among Sri Lankan SMEs and established exporters on effectively accessing the Japanese market.
The workshop, focused on key sectors such as Apparel, Tea, Spices, and Coconut-based products, was informed by extensive research on the market requirements in Japan. The event provided invaluable insights into the Japanese market, including important regulations, business expectations, and market trends.
The event was attended by 35 participants, representing businesses from the aforementioned sectors, who gained essential knowledge about entering the Japanese trade ecosystem. The session was inaugurated by Ms. Raghad Altalli, Senior Trade Facilitation Advisor & Project Manager at ITC, who highlighted the significance of strengthening Sri Lanka-Japan trade relations. Opening remarks were also delivered by Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman & CEO of the EDB, and Mr. Keerthi Gunawardane, President of FCCISL. Both underscored the need for a strategic approach in engaging with the Japanese market.
A comprehensive presentation on “Introduction and Overview of the Japanese Market” was delivered by an official from the Market Development Division of the EDB. Mr. C. P. Jayasinghe, National Expert from the ITC, followed with a detailed discussion on “Opportunities and Strategies for Accessing the Japanese Market for Sri Lankan Exporters.” His presentation provided actionable insights aimed at empowering Sri Lankan businesses to enhance their presence in Japan.
In addition, a session titled “Experience Sharing by Sri Lankan Exporters to Japan” featured representatives from leading export companies such as Bio Foods (Pvt) Ltd, JK Garments (Pvt) Ltd, and Arava Group of Companies. These companies shared their success stories and challenges in penetrating the Japanese market, offering practical advice to the participants.
The workshop also hosted a key session on “Cross-Border Requirements & Expectations of Japanese Importers,” where representatives from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Mitsui & Co. provided valuable insights into Japan’s import expectations and requirements. This session enabled participants to better understand the Japanese market from the perspective of Japanese stakeholders.
The event concluded with a networking lunch, providing an opportunity for Sri Lankan exporters to engage with Japanese trade representatives and foster valuable business connections.
The workshop proved to be a pivotal platform for Sri Lankan businesses seeking to expand their global footprint and tap into the Japanese market. Organisers expressed their commitment to continuing such initiatives, supporting Sri Lankan exporters in their efforts to successfully navigate the Japanese trade landscape.
