President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has instructed District Secretaries to prioritise grassroots-level development by allocating Rs. 1,400 billion in recurrent expenditure over the next eight months. The directive was issued during a discussion at the Presidential Secretariat on 27th February.

Reviving the Rural Economy

The President highlighted the importance of rural economic development, stating that effective measures could increase national economic growth by 3% to 4%. He urged officials to enhance existing economic opportunities while identifying new sources of growth within rural communities.

Additionally, discussions were held on the proposed pension schemes outlined in the 2025 budget, reflecting the government’s commitment to social welfare and long-term economic stability.

Public Sector Efficiency & Staffing

President Dissanayake acknowledged the negative perception of the public sector, attributing it to inefficiencies in government services. He stressed the need to enhance public sector efficiency by fostering a workforce that is both satisfied and effective.

With 30,000 vacancies currently identified in the public service, the President confirmed plans to recruit mid-level staff in phases to improve administrative efficiency.

Beyond Infrastructure: Social Revitalisation

The President reiterated that national development extends beyond infrastructure projects, encompassing the restoration of the nation’s social fabric. He emphasised that District Secretaries play a crucial role in strengthening social cohesion and addressing community concerns.

The meeting also included Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, Dr. Chandana Abeyratne; Secretary to the President, Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake; Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Alok Bandara; and all District Secretaries.
