British Airways has resumed direct flights between Colombo and London Gatwick, strengthening connectivity between Sri Lanka and the United Kingdom after more than a decade.

The inaugural arrival was welcomed with traditional dancers and drummers, marking a new chapter for tourism, trade, business travel and family connections between the countries.

The airline will operate three weekly services using Boeing 777 aircraft, offering Club World business class, World Traveller Plus premium economy and World Traveller economy cabins.

British Airways Chief Planning and Strategy Officer Neil Chernoff described Sri Lanka’s return to the airline’s global network as a special moment, highlighting the country’s culture, hospitality and appeal to international visitors.

General Manager for South Asia David Wright said recovering economic growth and tourism had supported the decision to resume services. Demand also reflected business travel and visits to friends and relatives.

To celebrate the launch, British Airways announced promotional World Traveller return fares from Colombo to London Gatwick starting at Rs. 255,000, with savings of up to 10%, subject to booking and travel conditions.

Hayleys Advantis Managing Director Ruwan Waidyaratne said the renewed connection would expand travel options, stimulate economic activity and deliver lasting benefits for Sri Lanka’s tourism industry. The company’s partnership with British Airways dates to 1995.

Jaffna-born Senior First Officer Pradeeb Vimalraj, who operated the inaugural flight, described returning home as particularly meaningful.

The airline also reported that searches for London–Colombo flights on its website had risen by more than 10% over the preceding week, indicating growing interest in Sri Lanka.
