Sri Lanka Hosts Global Securities Regulators to Strengthen Action Against Market Misconduct

Published on

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Sri Lanka (SEC) hosted securities regulators in Colombo for meetings aimed at strengthening cooperation against securities fraud and market misconduct.

Held at the Hilton Colombo from 13 to 16 October 2026, the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) meetings brought together approximately 50 senior representatives from regulators and exchanges across multiple jurisdictions.

Sessions included the Enforcement and Cooperation Committee and its Screening Group, alongside meetings of the Monitoring Group and Steering Committee.

Welcoming delegates, SEC Chairman Senior Professor D.B.P.H. Dissabandara emphasised that international cooperation, timely information sharing and mutual trust were essential to protecting investors and maintaining market integrity.

He highlighted the challenges posed by misconduct involving multiple jurisdictions, where transactions and illicit activities can move rapidly across borders.

Discussions covered stronger information exchange, investigative collaboration, sophisticated securities fraud, market abuse and the implementation of international regulatory standards. Delegates also shared experiences concerning technological developments, digital financial services and increasingly interconnected markets.

IOSCO develops international standards for securities regulation, supporting investor protection and fair, efficient and transparent markets.

Sri Lanka’s SEC became an Ordinary Member of IOSCO in 1993 and signed its Multilateral Memorandum of Understanding in 2004. The framework facilitates regulatory information sharing and international enforcement investigations.

The SEC has served on IOSCO’s Enforcement and Cooperation Committee since 2015.

Hosting the meetings provided an opportunity to strengthen professional relationships and coordinate responses to shared enforcement challenges, while reinforcing Sri Lanka’s engagement with international efforts to protect investors and support resilient capital markets worldwide.
