Sri Lanka’s tourism sector received a notable boost as a group of 200 Japanese tourists travelled to the island on a single SriLankan Airlines flight, marking an encouraging development in tourism relations between Sri Lanka and Japan.
The group departed from Narita International Airport aboard SriLankan Airlines Flight UL455, with the visit organised by the Little Japan Group and supported by the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Japan.
Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Japan, Prof. Pivithuru Janak Kumarasinghe, accompanied by First Secretary (Commerce) Sandun Sameera, met the travellers at the airport before their departure and wished them a safe journey and a memorable stay in Sri Lanka.
The visitors are expected to experience several of Sri Lanka’s leading tourism attractions, including the ancient city of Sigiriya, while also exploring traditional Ayurveda treatments and wellness offerings.
Ambassador Kumarasinghe described the movement of 200 Japanese tourists on a single flight as an encouraging development in bilateral tourism, noting that it represented one of the largest organised groups of Japanese travellers to visit Sri Lanka together.
He expressed confidence that growing interest among Japanese travellers, supported by continued promotional efforts from tourism industry stakeholders, could further strengthen exchanges between the two countries.
The initiative also highlights the potential of coordinated destination marketing, diplomatic engagement and organised group travel to expand Sri Lanka’s presence in valuable international tourism markets.
