Sri Lanka Emerges as a Preferred Destination for Indian Weddings

Published on

Sri Lanka is strengthening its position as one of Asia’s most sought after destination wedding locations, with a growing number of Indian couples choosing the island for experience led celebrations that combine luxury, culture and natural beauty.

According to the WedMeGood Destination Wedding Report 2026, Sri Lanka has emerged as one of the fastest growing overseas wedding destinations for Indian couples, driven by its luxury hospitality, cultural richness and experience led celebrations. Deccan Chronicle, reporting on the findings, highlighted that the island is attracting a growing number of couples seeking memorable multi day wedding experiences, reinforcing Sri Lanka’s reputation as a premium destination for luxury celebrations.

The report notes that nearly one in four Indian weddings is now a destination wedding, with the proportion expected to increase to between 30 and 32 per cent by 2028. Spending on destination weddings has also risen by eight per cent year on year as couples increasingly favour personalised experiences over conventional celebrations.

Mehak Shahani, Co Founder of WedMeGood, said modern couples are increasingly seeking meaningful celebrations centred on immersive guest experiences, curated culinary journeys, wellness activities and bespoke travel itineraries. She observed that destination weddings have evolved into memorable experiences that reflect the personalities and aspirations of couples while creating lasting memories for family and friends.

Sri Lanka’s visa free access for Indian travellers, short flying time, world class hospitality, pristine beaches, cultural heritage, wellness experiences and scenic landscapes have made it an increasingly attractive wedding destination. Leading venues including Shangri La Hambantota, Shangri La Colombo and Amaya Hills Kandy continue to attract growing international interest.

Refhan Razeen, General Manager of Shangri La Hambantota, noted that the resort has welcomed more than 700,000 guests and hosted over 40 destination weddings. He said Indian couples increasingly prefer intimate, experience driven, multi day celebrations, placing Sri Lanka in a strong position to benefit from the expanding destination wedding market.

The report highlights a significant opportunity for Sri Lanka’s tourism and hospitality industries, with destination weddings expected to generate increased international visitor arrivals, premium tourism revenue and foreign exchange earnings while enhancing the country’s global tourism brand.
