Renovated Narahenpita Railway Station Reopens Under ‘Dream Destination’ Initiative

Published on

The renovated Narahenpita Railway Station has officially reopened to the public, marking another milestone in Sri Lanka’s efforts to modernise its railway infrastructure under the ‘Dream Destination’ initiative, a sustainable public private partnership programme implemented as part of the Clean Sri Lanka initiative. The reopening forms part of a nationwide programme to upgrade 100 railway stations, enhancing the quality, safety and accessibility of rail transport across the country.

The reopening ceremony was attended by Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake, who reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to improving the nation’s transport infrastructure and providing commuters with safer, more efficient and passenger friendly railway services. The initiative reflects the Government’s broader vision of transforming railway stations into modern public spaces that support sustainable mobility and economic development.

The modernisation project, valued at approximately Rs. 40 million, was undertaken by MAGA Engineering (Pvt) Ltd in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Railways Department under the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Urban Development. The refurbishment included the construction of a new passenger overhead bridge, an extended second platform, upgraded sanitary and drainage systems, improved electrical lighting, new passenger seating, renovated railway staff quarters, extensive interior and exterior improvements, and the resurfacing of the station access road.

Located on the busy Kelani Valley railway line, Narahenpita Railway Station serves thousands of commuters travelling daily to government institutions, private sector offices and commercial centres. The upgraded facilities are expected to improve passenger convenience, accessibility and safety while encouraging greater use of public transport.

The project underscores the Government’s commitment to strengthening Sri Lanka’s railway network through sustainable infrastructure investment, enhancing urban mobility and supporting long term economic growth while delivering a better travel experience for the public.
