University of Sri Jayewardenepura and Port City Colombo Publish International Case Study on Sri Lanka’s Economic Transformation

Published on

The University of Sri Jayewardenepura, in collaboration with CHEC Port City Colombo, has internationally published a comprehensive academic case study examining the transformative potential of Port City Colombo in shaping Sri Lanka’s long-term economic future.

Published by Nova Publishers, the study, titled Port City Colombo: Catalysing Sri Lanka’s Emergence as a Global Investment Hub, provides a multidisciplinary analysis of the project’s urban planning, investment strategy, regulatory framework, sustainability and economic impact. The publication appears as a chapter in the book Is Sri Lanka Revitalising its Economy? An Analysis of Economic Policy and Technological Adoption, published under the 21st International Conference on Business Management (ICBM), the flagship conference of the University’s Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce.

The study explores how Port City Colombo, as a Special Economic Zone, could support Sri Lanka’s transition towards a globally competitive, service-oriented economy by enhancing investment, innovation, ease of doing business and long-term economic resilience.

Xiong Hongfeng said the project extends beyond infrastructure and investment, creating new economic opportunities for future generations. He noted that collaboration with academia provides an independent perspective on the project’s broader contribution to national development.

The research was led by Prathap Kaluthanthri together with representatives from CHEC Port City Colombo led by Shalaka Wijeyaratne. Prof. Kaluthanthri said the publication demonstrates the University’s commitment to addressing contemporary economic and urban development challenges through rigorous academic research.

Faculty Dean Dushan Jayawickrama said the publication provides students, researchers, policymakers and industry professionals with an evidence-based resource for evaluating one of Sri Lanka’s most significant development initiatives. The case study is now available internationally through Nova Publishers for academic, research and educational use.
