The Board of Investment of Sri Lanka (BOI) has bid farewell to its Director General, Renuka M. Weerakone, who retired on 30 June after completing an exceptional 32-year career dedicated to advancing Sri Lanka’s investment promotion and economic development.
Joining the BOI in June 1994 as an Assistant Manager (Legal), Weerakone steadily progressed through the organisation, serving in a range of strategic leadership positions before assuming the role of Director General. Her extensive experience across investment promotion, project implementation, regional development, investment appraisal, project monitoring, and the Director General’s Secretariat provided her with a comprehensive understanding of Sri Lanka’s investment landscape.
An Attorney-at-Law, Notary Public, and Commissioner for Oaths, Weerakone further strengthened her professional credentials by earning an MBA from the Postgraduate Institute of Management, University of Sri Jayewardenepura. Throughout her career, she represented Sri Lanka at international investment forums and trade negotiations while leading investment promotion missions to key global markets. She also served on numerous national policy, project approval, and inter-agency committees that played an important role in enhancing the country’s investment climate.
Beyond the BOI, Weerakone serves as a Board Member of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Sri Lanka. In 2025, she was honoured with the Women in Investment and International Trade Leadership award at the Top50 Professional & Career Women Global Awards.
Expressing its appreciation, the BOI thanked Weerakone for her outstanding service, leadership, and commitment over three decades, acknowledging her lasting contribution to strengthening Sri Lanka’s investment promotion framework and international reputation.
