The Japan International Cooperation Agency, together with the Presidential Secretariat and the World Bank, co-hosted a seminar in Colombo on strengthening competition policy and law in Sri Lanka.

The event brought together over 70 policymakers, regulators, private sector leaders and international experts to explore how robust competition frameworks can support economic reforms and long-term growth. Moderated by Harsha Fernando, the panel discussion examined issues such as fair competition, consumer protection, innovation and digital transformation.

Senior Additional Secretary to the President Russell Aponsu, delivering the keynote address, reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to fostering a competitive business environment, highlighting ongoing reforms including e-procurement and tariff rationalisation.

JICA Sri Lanka Chief Representative Kenji Kuronuma emphasised that competition policy is vital for economic recovery and global competitiveness.

The seminar underscored the need for comprehensive legislation, effective enforcement mechanisms and stronger stakeholder collaboration.
