Trump Prepares Fresh Tariff Offensive as New Trade Measures Target Dozens of Countries

Published on

The administration of US President Donald Trump is preparing to introduce a fresh wave of tariffs on imports from dozens of countries, signalling a renewed escalation in global trade tensions as temporary tariff measures approach their expiry.

According to reports, the proposed measures could affect around 60 trading partners representing the overwhelming majority of United States imports. The new tariffs are expected to replace temporary blanket duties that are due to expire, following legal challenges that limited the administration’s earlier use of emergency powers to impose broad trade restrictions.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said the administration expects to announce further trade actions soon, although no specific timetable has been confirmed. The proposed measures are expected to be pursued under Section 301 of the US Trade Act, with the administration citing concerns over forced labour and unfair trade practices as justification.

The latest initiative follows President Trump’s decision to impose new tariffs on selected Canadian imports, reinforcing his administration’s commitment to an America First trade policy. While supporters argue the measures will protect domestic industries and strengthen manufacturing, critics warn they could increase costs for businesses and consumers while provoking retaliatory action from trading partners.

Economists believe the renewed tariff campaign could have significant implications for global supply chains, investment decisions and international commerce. Markets are also closely watching whether affected countries will respond with countermeasures or seek negotiated settlements to avoid a broader trade conflict.

The developments are expected to influence global business sentiment in the coming months as governments and multinational companies assess the impact of another period of heightened trade uncertainty.
