Thailand and European Union Accelerate Free Trade Agreement Negotiations

Published on

Thailand and the European Union have made significant progress in negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with both sides agreeing to accelerate discussions aimed at strengthening trade, investment and long term economic cooperation. The latest round of high level talks was held in Brussels, where officials reaffirmed their commitment to resolving outstanding issues and concluding the agreement as soon as possible.

The Thai delegation included Thai Trade Representative Werapong Prapha, who participated in meetings alongside Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister Suphajee Suthumpun with European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič and European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen. The discussions covered a broad range of issues, including agricultural products, industrial goods, government procurement, digital trade, energy, raw materials and intellectual property.

Both parties also explored opportunities for closer cooperation under the European Union’s Global Gateway initiative, including renewable energy, sustainable aviation fuel, water resource management and supply chain connectivity. Discussions further addressed compliance with new European environmental regulations, labour standards and supply chain transparency to strengthen investor confidence and facilitate future trade.

European business representatives expressed confidence in Thailand’s strategic position as a regional manufacturing and logistics hub linking Europe with ASEAN markets. The proposed FTA is expected to improve market access, attract new investment and create opportunities in emerging industries while enhancing supply chain resilience.

The progress achieved in Brussels reflects the shared determination of Thailand and the European Union to deepen economic ties, expand bilateral trade and build a modern, sustainable and mutually beneficial partnership that supports long term growth and regional competitiveness.
