Sri Lanka to Launch Digital National ID Cards

Published on

The Government announced plans to launch digital National Identity Cards (NICs) this month, marking a key step towards a fully digital economy.

Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne revealed the Rs. 20 billion initiative aims to modernise identity verification, address issuance delays, and enhance integration with other Government services. India has pledged to cover half the project’s cost.

“This is a pivotal step for Sri Lanka to become a digitally advanced nation,” Weeraratne stated.

The new digital NICs will feature enhanced security, faster issuance, and seamless integration with state services.
