Sri Lanka–Thailand Business Council Meets Thai Ambassador to Advance Economic Ties

Sri Lanka–Thailand Business Council President Rizan Nazeer and executive committee members recently met Thai Ambassador Paitoon Mahapannaporn to discuss trade, investment and employment links.

The delegation sought clarity on outstanding approvals and the implementation timetable for the bilateral Free Trade Agreement, signed on 3 February 2024.

Discussions explored export opportunities for Sri Lankan goods, Thai investment prospects and closer commercial partnerships. The council offered to organise business meetings, delegations and an awareness programme once the agreement becomes operational.

Labour cooperation was another priority. The council welcomed signed arrangements understood to create an initial 10,000 employment opportunities for Sri Lankans in Thailand, while requesting details on implementation, recruitment procedures and required qualifications.

It also proposed connecting Thai employers with Sri Lankan recruitment organisations and training institutions, and requested a verified vacancy database. Easier visa arrangements, including online applications or visas at entry points, were discussed.

The engagement builds on a relationship the council has nurtured since its establishment in 2001. Celebrating its silver jubilee earlier this year, the organisation highlighted opportunities across tourism, agriculture, food processing, logistics, gems and jewellery, apparel, technology and professional services.

At that anniversary gathering, Ambassador Mahapannaporn emphasised the importance of trade missions, business forums and direct engagement in building commercial trust.

The latest dialogue therefore points towards a practical next stage: translating bilateral cooperation into accessible opportunities for companies and workers. Clear procedures, reliable information and sustained contact between institutions will be essential to helping businesses prepare for new markets and applicants understand potential employment pathways.
