Sri Lanka’s tourism sector began 2026 on a strong note, recording its highest ever January arrivals with 277,327 visitors, surpassing last year’s previous record. The figure represents a 10 per cent year on year increase, reflecting sustained recovery and growing global confidence in the destination.

Average daily arrivals reached 8,946, with a peak of 10,483 visitors recorded on 15 January. India emerged as the largest source market, followed by the UK and Russia. Strong growth was recorded from India and the UK, while arrivals from Russia declined.

Tourism authorities remain optimistic, targeting three million visitors in 2026. Planned measures, including visa facilitation and destination branding, are expected to further strengthen the sector’s growth momentum.
