Parliament has approved the Second Reading of the Prevention of Money Laundering (Amendment) Bill with the required two thirds majority, marking a significant step towards strengthening Sri Lanka’s anti money laundering framework and aligning it with international standards.

A total of 154 Members of Parliament voted in favour of the Bill, while two MPs voted against it, resulting in a majority of 152 votes. Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake informed Parliament that the Bill required a special majority in accordance with the determination of the Supreme Court.

The amendments are expected to reinforce the country’s legal and regulatory framework for combating money laundering, enhance financial transparency, strengthen law enforcement capabilities, and improve compliance with international anti money laundering and counter terrorism financing standards. The legislation also supports Sri Lanka’s ongoing efforts to strengthen financial governance, enhance investor confidence, and reinforce the integrity of the country’s financial system.
