Sri Lanka Moves to Implement National Pharmaceutical Policy 2026–2030

Published on

Sri Lanka is set to accelerate the implementation of its National Pharmaceutical Policy for 2026–2030, following Cabinet approval for a renewed framework aimed at ensuring equitable access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential medicines across the country.

The policy responds to evolving national health requirements, changes in the global pharmaceutical market and persistent challenges affecting medicine supply chains. It also places greater emphasis on strengthening local pharmaceutical manufacturing as Sri Lanka seeks to build a more resilient and sustainable healthcare system.

The Cabinet approved the proposal submitted by Health and Mass Media Minister Dr Nalinda Jayatissa to prioritise and expedite implementation of the updated policy. (Daily Mirror)

Sri Lanka introduced its existing National Pharmaceutical Policy in 2005. Preliminary efforts to update the framework were undertaken between 2020 and 2025, but the process was not completed. The new policy incorporates lessons from the implementation of the previous framework while addressing emerging challenges within both domestic and international pharmaceutical markets.

A major focus will be ensuring the sustainable and equitable availability of medicines that meet recognised quality and safety standards. The policy is also expected to encourage scientifically appropriate and cost effective use of medical products among healthcare professionals and consumers, helping improve treatment outcomes while reducing unnecessary expenditure and waste. Strengthening efficient local production of essential medical products that meet required standards of safety, quality and authenticity is another key objective.

The initiative comes as Sri Lanka continues broader efforts to strengthen pharmaceutical regulation, medication safety and healthcare quality, positioning access to reliable and affordable medicines as an important element of the country’s public health strategy.
