SLPMA Issues National Call to Build Sri Lanka’s Pharmaceutical Industry

Published on

In a bold move to transform Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical sector, the Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (SLPMA) issued a national call to action to develop a high-quality, export-oriented manufacturing industry. Under the theme “A National Call to Produce Medicine in Sri Lanka – with Care, Trust, and Unity,” the announcement was made during the Association’s Annual General Meeting.

A key highlight was the presentation of SLPMA’s national policy proposal to senior government officials—a comprehensive blueprint that outlines a vision for pharmaceutical self-reliance, reduced import dependence, and economic upliftment. The proposal calls for producing 75% of Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical needs locally, creating over 10,000 skilled jobs, and generating USD 1 billion in exports within the next 5–10 years.

SLPMA President Nalin Kannangara noted, “With the right policy consistency and regulatory backing, we can build a true thrust industry that ensures long-term pharmaceutical security for the nation.”

The event featured a high-level panel including Prof. Gomika Udugamasooriya, Dr. Ananda Wijewickrama, Prof. Jayantha Wijayabandara, and other senior officials. SLPMA urged for a multi-stakeholder task force to implement its roadmap and reaffirmed its commitment to accountability and accessible, quality healthcare for all Sri Lankans.
