Pelwatte Breaks Ground on Advanced Liquid Milk Facility in Kurunegala

Published on

Pelwatte Dairy Industries has commenced construction of a state of the art liquid milk manufacturing facility in Kurunegala, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion strategy and Sri Lanka’s drive to strengthen domestic dairy production.

The new project, undertaken through Pelwatte Foods, a wholly owned subsidiary of the company, is expected to enhance the country’s capacity to produce high quality liquid milk and value added dairy beverages using advanced automated processing technology. The facility will manufacture fresh liquid milk together with flavoured milk products, supporting the growing demand for locally produced nutritious dairy products.

Pelwatte Dairy Chairman Ariyaseela Wickramanayake said the investment represents more than a business expansion, reflecting the company’s long term commitment to improving national nutrition and strengthening Sri Lanka’s dairy industry. The groundbreaking ceremony also highlighted the participation of Akmal Wickramanayake, Managing Director of Pelwatte Dairy, while Dr Sulakshana Jayawardena, Chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka, was associated with the investment initiative.

The project is expected to reduce Sri Lanka’s dependence on imported dairy products while creating greater demand for locally sourced fresh milk from dairy farmers. Industry observers believe the investment will strengthen the local dairy value chain, improve food security and contribute to rural economic development through enhanced opportunities for milk suppliers.

Designed to meet international manufacturing standards, the highly automated facility is expected to deliver consistent product quality while supporting sustainable industry growth. The investment also aligns with broader national efforts to improve nutrition, particularly for children and expectant mothers, through increased access to locally produced dairy products.
