Colombo, 29 May 2025 — In a bold step toward fostering inclusive economic development, National Development Bank PLC (NDB Bank) has officially launched a comprehensive Women’s Entrepreneurship Support Course under the highly regarded Sri Lanka Vanithabhimana initiative. This new phase moves beyond awards and recognition to provide structured, skills-based support aimed at equipping women entrepreneurs with the tools they need to succeed—both locally and globally.
Speaking at the press briefing held in Colombo, Mr. Kelum Edirisinghe, CEO of NDB Bank, reiterated the institution’s strong commitment to women’s economic empowerment:
“As part of our sustainable efforts through Vanithabhimana, we are proud to launch this programme that will equip women entrepreneurs with critical skills for business growth. With over 140 registrations already, it clearly shows the demand for structured entrepreneurial development in Sri Lanka,” he said.
Mr. Edirisinghe noted that while 52% of Sri Lanka’s population is female, only about one-third of women actively participate in the workforce. “Increasing women’s participation is critical for uplifting the country’s economy,” he emphasised. “Better utilisation of female talent can boost productivity, expand the labour force, and foster more inclusive and sustainable growth.”
This year marks the fifth consecutive edition of the Vanithabhimana programme, now reimagined with a sharper focus on long-term development. The centrepiece of the new phase is the Women’s Entrepreneurship Support Course (Vanitha Vyawasayakathva Athwela)—a free, three-month training programme covering practical topics such as business administration, HR management, accounting, sales, and marketing. The course will be delivered by industry experts and seasoned professionals.
Mr. Edirisinghe acknowledged the critical role of strategic partnerships in bringing this initiative to life. “We are proud to be supported by institutions such as LEADS, the Export Development Board (EDB), and Wayamba University, who will help provide valuable resources to the programme. And we are deeply grateful to our media partner, Maharaja Corporation, whose commitment has elevated this initiative to a national platform.”
The programme is more than just training—it is a nation-building effort. It aligns with broader government goals such as generating employment, increasing foreign exchange earnings, and raising the standard of Sri Lankan enterprises to compete internationally.
“We are looking forward to working with the female entrepreneurs of this country to help them make an impactful contribution to the national economy,” Mr. Edirisinghe said. “This initiative is a testament to our ongoing commitment to uplifting women and fostering real, meaningful change.”
NDB Bank encourages aspiring and established women entrepreneurs from across Sri Lanka to join this transformative journey and take advantage of the education, mentorship, and support offered.
