Excerpts of the discussion
Q: Could you share with us a brief overview of your journey, first on becoming a CEO, and then on how your experience as a CEO prepared you for your role as High Commissioner?
My journey began in the private sector, focusing on real estate and finance. I started at The Finance Company PLC as a Management Trainee, later advancing to Sales Manager. Subsequently, I took on roles such as Director and General Manager of Ceylinco Housing & Real Estate Co. Ltd., where I managed significant real estate projects like Trillium Residencies.
In 2009, I became CEO of Macksons Properties (Pvt) Ltd., overseeing major developments like Mandarina Colombo and Macksons Tower, guiding them from design to completion. This experience prepared me well for the role of High Commissioner. Leadership, strategic planning, and relationship-building were crucial in both positions. Managing large-scale projects taught me how to navigate complex challenges, and my networks in the Maldives facilitated a seamless transition into diplomacy. These skills now support my efforts to foster stronger relations between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Q: How has your private-sector background specifically helped in your diplomatic role?
My private-sector experience, particularly in partnership-building and managing large-scale projects, has been invaluable. In diplomacy, as in business, it’s essential to develop relationships, solve problems, and negotiate. My background in project management and stakeholder engagement has enabled me to streamline diplomatic efforts and advance initiatives that promote trade, employment, and cooperation between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.
Q: Throughout your career in both public and private sectors, what leadership qualities have you found essential to achieving your goals?
Strategic vision, adaptability, and effective communication have been the most essential qualities in both corporate and diplomatic roles. In business, I focused on long-term growth, and now, as High Commissioner, I apply the same principles to enhancing Sri Lanka’s relationship with the Maldives. Networking has always been crucial—strong relationships with stakeholders have been key to my success.
Q: As a CEO, you led major projects like Trillium Residencies, Mandarina Colombo, and Macksons Tower. What strategies did you implement to ensure their success?
These projects succeeded through meticulous planning and market analysis to ensure we delivered what the market needed. I built strong partnerships and created capable teams who shared our vision of quality and innovation. My role was to ensure that every stage of the development aligned with broader business objectives, always balancing market demands with the project’s long-term value.
Q: What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in your career, both in the corporate world and in your diplomatic role?
In the corporate sector, managing large-scale developments during economic uncertainty was challenging, requiring adaptability and a clear vision. As a diplomat, the challenges are more policy-oriented, such as navigating regulatory barriers and aligning Sri Lankan interests with Maldivian priorities. Achieving shared goals in tourism, employment, and trade demands both strategic planning and relationship-building.
Q: What key initiatives have you introduced since taking office to enhance Sri Lanka-Maldives relations?
My initiatives are focused on tourism, trade, education, and employment. I have collaborated with tour operators to offer round-trip packages to attract high-end tourists. In healthcare, I am working with Aasandha to expand medical tourism by registering Sri Lankan hospitals. For education, I’ve created pathways for Maldivian students to study in Sri Lanka with long-term visas. Additionally, I’m advancing key agreements to smooth trade and economic cooperation.
Mr. Ranga Goonawardena’s journey from CEO to High Commissioner exemplifies the value of adaptability and relationship-building across industries. His leadership is advancing Sri Lanka’s interests and strengthening the nation’s ties with the Maldives, creating new opportunities for both countries.
