Indonesia Showcases Blue Economy Model for Wider ASEAN Adoption

Published on

Indonesia has showcased the Banyuwangi blue economy model as a best practice for sustainable marine development, encouraging its wider adoption across ASEAN to promote economic growth, environmental conservation and stronger regional cooperation. The initiative was highlighted during the ASEAN ID Blue Forum held in East Java, which brought together policymakers and development partners from ASEAN, the East Asia Summit and the Pacific Islands Forum.

The forum was jointly organised by Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The event focused on strengthening collaboration in the blue economy by sharing practical experiences in sustainable fisheries, marine conservation, coastal tourism and community development.

Banyuwangi was selected as the venue in recognition of its success in balancing economic development with environmental sustainability. The regency has developed an integrated model that combines responsible fisheries, marine ecosystem conservation, sustainable tourism and support for small businesses, while improving the livelihoods of coastal communities. Indonesian authorities expressed hope that the model could serve as a practical example for other ASEAN member states.

Delegates also participated in field visits to Merah Putih Fishing Village and the Bangsring Underwater Marine Conservation Area, where they observed how conservation efforts have been successfully linked with marine tourism, local enterprise development and community empowerment.

The forum reaffirmed Indonesia’s commitment to advancing the ASEAN Blue Economy Framework and fostering closer regional cooperation to ensure that marine resources contribute to long term economic prosperity while preserving the health of ocean ecosystems for future generations.
