Education for a Global Future: Ajith Abeysekera’s Mission for Success

Proper education is a fundamental pillar in shaping individuals into efficient and effective corporate citizens.

It not only equips students with academic knowledge but also instils critical thinking, adaptability, and a global perspective—qualities essential for success in today’s competitive world.

However, navigating the path to higher education, particularly international studies, involves numerous challenges.

In this exclusive discussion, we sit down with Mr Ajith Abeysekera, Chairman of Aspirations Education, to gain valuable insights into the journey of overseas education.

With over two decades of experience, Mr Abeysekera has played a pivotal role in guiding thousands of students towards achieving their academic and professional aspirations. His expertise spans university selection, visa processes, career planning, and ensuring students are well-prepared to thrive in their chosen fields.

Beyond education consultancy, Mr Abeysekera is deeply committed to social responsibility. Through the Aspirations Education Foundation, he has dedicated himself to uplifting underprivileged communities, emphasising that true success is not just about personal achievement but also about giving back to society.

In this conversation, he shares his thoughts on the significance of education in shaping future leaders, the critical aspects of studying abroad, and the responsibilities students should embrace as they embark on their academic journeys.

How important is it for students to identify their career goals early, and how does Aspirations Education support them in this process?

Ajith Abeysekera: Identifying career goals early is crucial because it allows students to take a structured approach towards their education and future profession. At Aspirations Education, we emphasise the importance of self-awareness—understanding one’s strengths, interests, and long-term ambitions.

The first step in our process is ensuring that both students and their parents have a clear understanding of their options. Some students plan to study abroad right after their O/Levels, while others wait until their A/Levels or even postgraduate studies. Once this decision is made, early preparation becomes essential.

We guide students in choosing a field of study that aligns with their skills and interests. Today, there are numerous options—ranging from traditional disciplines like medicine, engineering, and finance to emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, cybersecurity, and sustainability. It is important that students choose a path they are genuinely passionate about because enjoying what you study leads to better performance and long-term success.

What are the key areas students should focus on when preparing for international education?

Ajith Abeysekera: Preparation for overseas education involves four key areas:
1. Mental Preparedness: Students must be ready for the challenges of living and studying in a foreign country. Adjusting to a new culture, academic style, and independent living requires resilience and adaptability.
2. Educational Preparedness: Universities have specific academic requirements. Students must ensure they meet the prerequisites for their chosen programmes and have a strong academic foundation.
3. Language Proficiency: English language requirements are an essential part of international education. Students must be proficient in tests like IELTS or PTE to meet university entry standards.
4. Financial Preparedness: Studying abroad is a significant investment. Families must calculate tuition fees, living expenses, and other costs in advance. Parents need to assess their financial capabilities and explore funding options, including education loans if necessary.
These aspects must be planned carefully to ensure a smooth transition.

What financial factors should families consider when planning international education?

Ajith Abeysekera: The financial aspect is often the most challenging part of studying abroad. It is not just about tuition fees—families must also consider accommodation, food, transportation, healthcare, and other living expenses.

Parents should assess their income sources—whether from employment, business, property, or other investments—and determine how much they can allocate for their child’s education. Since foreign exchange rates fluctuate, it is important to calculate the total cost over the entire duration of the course, not just for the first year.

For families with financial constraints, education loans can be an option. However, they must ensure they can service the loan while managing other financial commitments.
Planning well in advance prevents unnecessary financial stress.

How does the visa process impact a student’s journey, and what challenges do applicants face?

Ajith Abeysekera: The visa process is one of the most critical steps in securing international education. Each country has its own visa regulations, and students must meet academic, financial, and English proficiency requirements.

Visa officers assess several factors:
• The student’s academic consistency and purpose for studying abroad.
• Financial stability—proof that the family can support tuition and living expenses.
• Language proficiency, as universities require students to have adequate English skills.
• The overall credibility of the student’s application.
If there are gaps in education, insufficient financial documentation, or an unclear study plan, the visa may be rejected. That is why we help students organise their applications thoroughly, ensuring they present a strong case.

Aspirations Education has affiliations with over 100 universities worldwide. How do you help students choose the right institution?

Ajith Abeysekera: Every student is unique, and selecting the right university requires careful evaluation. Some key factors include:
• The university’s academic reputation and rankings.
• Course content and career prospects.
• Cost of tuition and living expenses in the chosen city.
• The country’s post-study work opportunities.
We encourage students to look beyond rankings and consider universities that offer strong support systems, research opportunities, and career pathways in their field of interest. Our team works closely with students to match them with institutions that align with their goals.

What role does employability play in choosing a study programme?

Ajith Abeysekera: Employability should always be a top priority. A degree alone is not enough—students must ensure that their chosen field has strong career prospects.
We advise students to research job opportunities and industry trends. Some professions have higher demand in certain countries, offering better post-graduation employment opportunities. For instance, Australia, Canada, and the UK have strong demand in areas like healthcare, engineering, and technology.

Students should also consider internship opportunities and networking possibilities during their studies, as these significantly enhance employability.

You have also been involved in social responsibility through the Aspirations Education Foundation. Could you share more about this initiative?

Ajith Abeysekera: The Aspirations Education Foundation was launched to support underprivileged students in rural areas. For nearly two decades, we have provided educational resources, mentorship, and financial assistance to those who lack access to quality education.

Many students in Sri Lanka struggle with financial barriers, lack of transport, and even basic nutrition. While middle-class families may find ways to support their children’s education, marginalised communities often have no such opportunities. We believe that education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, which is why we invest in helping these students.

My philosophy is simple: True success is not measured by personal achievements alone—it is about uplifting others along the way. We owe our progress to the hard work of many people, including the farmers, labourers, and workers who built the foundation for our society. Giving back is our responsibility.

Finally, what advice would you give to students aspiring to study abroad?

Ajith Abeysekera: My advice is to be well-prepared, stay informed, and make responsible decisions. Studying abroad is a life-changing journey that comes with both opportunities and challenges. Students should embrace learning, stay adaptable, and build strong networks.

More importantly, they should remember their roots. While exploring global opportunities, they should find ways to contribute back to their home country and community. True success lies in balancing personal achievements with a sense of social responsibility.
At Aspirations Education, we are here to guide students through this journey. We believe that with the right mindset and preparation, they can achieve great things—not just for themselves, but for the world around them.

In a nutshell Aspirations Education is ” The Fountain of Inspiration to realise your
Aspirations ! ”
