In the world of business leadership, resilience, innovation, and adaptability are the key ingredients to success.
One such inspiring leader is Mrs M.A. PubudIni Ishanthi, the Chairperson and CEO of the ProMET Group, a conglomerate of five thriving companies.
With an impressive academic background—holding a BSc. Honours Degree in Computing, an Advanced Diploma in Management Accountancy from CIMA, and an MBA from the University of Colombo—she stands as a testament to the power of continuous learning and strategic leadership.
Beyond her professional achievements, PubudIni is a member of the Sri Lanka Institute of Directors and the Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
Her outstanding leadership was recognised when she won the Bronze Award in the Large Category at the Women Entrepreneurship Awards 2024, a prestigious accolade from the Women’s Chamber of Industry and Commerce.
In this exclusive interview with Global CEO Magazine, we delve into her journey—from taking the reins of her family business during a time of immense personal and economic challenges to pioneering sustainability-driven innovations and inspiring the next generation of women entrepreneurs.
Congratulations on your recent recognition at the Women Entrepreneurship Awards 2024. What does this achievement mean to you?
A: This is actually the first award I have received in my entrepreneurial journey, making it even more special. Winning the Bronze Award at the Women Entrepreneurship Awards 2024 has been a significant milestone for me. It has not only validated my efforts but also motivated me to push further towards my goals. While the award was specifically for Professional Eco Care (Pvt) Ltd., one of the companies in our group, it has inspired me to drive growth across the entire ProMET Group. It has reinforced my belief in perseverance and strategic vision, pushing me to set even higher standards for our businesses.
Every entrepreneur faces challenges. What were the biggest obstacles you had to overcome, and how did you navigate through them?
A: The most challenging period in my life was in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic when I lost my father, who was the founding chairperson of our group. At the same time, I was expecting my second child. Stepping into a leadership role in the midst of personal loss and a global crisis was extremely difficult.
Additionally, our business operates in the engineering services sector, which is predominantly male-dominated. Taking charge as a female leader in this field came with its own set of challenges. However, I have always viewed obstacles as opportunities for growth. I focused on strategic planning and resilience, ensuring that despite the economic downturn in Sri Lanka, our group not only survived but continued to thrive. I strongly believe in facing challenges with a positive mindset, and that has been instrumental in our success.
Innovation is a key driver of business growth. How do you incorporate innovation and sustainability into your business model?
A: Innovation and sustainability are at the heart of our growth strategy. One of our primary focus areas is sustainable business practices, particularly in our steam sealing sector, where we are pioneers in Sri Lanka.
We have also expanded into wood chip production, establishing our fifth company within the group. This aligns with our goal of creating environmentally responsible business solutions. Additionally, we are in the process of obtaining the Sustainability Certification from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI), ensuring that our manufacturing facilities meet international sustainability standards.
By integrating sustainability into our operations, we aim to not only remain competitive but also contribute positively to the environment and the communities we serve.
As a leader, what legacy do you hope to leave behind, particularly for young entrepreneurs and women in business?
A: I have always been passionate about entrepreneurship, even from a young age. Watching my father build this business from the ground up was a huge inspiration for me. My message to young entrepreneurs is simple—keep dreaming and never give up. Opportunities exist everywhere; you just need to be proactive and seize them.
For women in business, I understand that the journey can be particularly challenging due to the multiple responsibilities we juggle. Many women put their careers on hold for family reasons, but I always encourage them to explore flexible business options, such as home-based ventures, instead of giving up completely.
Entrepreneurship is about resilience, adaptability, and continuous learning. Even in difficult times, staying motivated and keeping your team aligned with your vision is crucial. Success doesn’t happen overnight, but with perseverance, it is always within reach.
Looking back at your journey, what is the most powerful advice you would share with aspiring leaders?
A: My advice is straightforward—embrace challenges as stepping stones to success. Never allow setbacks to discourage you. Instead, use them as motivation to push forward. Have a clear vision, build strong strategies, and always strive for excellence.
Most importantly, stay motivated and inspire those around you. As a leader, you don’t have to do everything yourself, but you must guide, empower, and support your team in achieving collective success.
