Colombo – Global new energy vehicle (NEV) giant BYD took another major leap in the Sri Lankan automotive market with the official launch of its rugged and adventure-ready plug-in hybrid pickup, the BYD SHARK 6, at a high-profile event held at Cinnamon Life. Hosted by John Keells CG Auto, the authorised distributor of BYD in Sri Lanka, the event drew significant media and industry attention.
The evening commenced with a press conference at The Studio, followed by the much-anticipated public reveal of the SHARK 6 at The Podium, where the vehicle’s versatility and road capabilities were showcased to media, business leaders, and automobile enthusiasts.
This launch marks a new chapter for BYD in Sri Lanka, a market that has rapidly embraced new energy mobility following the easing of import restrictions earlier this year. Since its local debut, BYD has emerged as a fast-growing brand in both the electric and plug-in hybrid segments.
Speaking at the event, Krishan Balendra, Chairperson of the John Keells Group, remarked:

As of April 2025, BYD has recorded a significant rise in market share, driven by consumer favourites such as:
• BYD SEALION 6 – Offering a combined range of 1,092 km with intelligent DiPilot driving assistance.
• BYD ATTO 3 – A stylish all-electric SUV with a 480 km real-world range and rapid 30–50 minute charging cycle.
• BYD DOLPHIN – A compact, affordable urban vehicle known for its innovative design.
• BYD SEAL – A sleek and high-performance EV with luxury finishes.
Now, the BYD SHARK 6 joins this expanding fleet, offering an off-road-ready plug-in hybrid built for adventure, combining cutting-edge technology with rugged performance.
To meet increasing demand, BYD and JKCG Auto are rapidly expanding their showroom and aftersales network. New facilities are set to open in Ampara and Ratnapura, supplementing current locations in Colombo, Galle, Kandy, and Kurunegala. Service centres are also being enhanced to ensure strong national coverage.
A Glimpse Into the Future: DENZA to Enter Sri Lankan Market
In a further milestone, BYD and JKCG Auto signed an MoU to introduce DENZA, BYD’s premium NEV brand, to Sri Lanka. With a lineup including the D9, N7, and Z9GT, DENZA combines futuristic design with advanced safety and luxury, promising to redefine the premium NEV segment.
