In this edition of Global CEO Magazine, we are excited to feature a conversation with Ms. Anuradha Herath the visionary founder and Managing Director of Java Lounge, one of Sri Lanka’s largest coffee house chains.
Anuradha is also the Executive Director of Kapruka Holdings PLC , a publicly listed company. In this engaging interview, conducted by Nadee Balasuriya from Global CEO Magazine, Anuradha shares her journey of building Java Lounge from the ground up, the strategies behind its remarkable growth, and the challenges faced along the way.
She also highlights her commitment to quality, innovation, and empowering women in business, offering valuable insights for aspiring entrepreneurs and business leaders alike.
Q: We often see Java Lounge while travelling, and it has become one of the leading coffee house chains in Sri Lanka, with 17 Java Lounge outlets and 4 Java Chocolate Haven outlets. This is remarkable growth and a significant journey. What were the key strategies you implemented to achieve this success?
A: I would like to highlight two main factors. First, maintaining consistent quality and standards across all outlets. Second, focusing on slow and steady growth.
Q: You must have faced many challenges on this journey. What were some of the biggest obstacles you encountered?
A: One of the biggest challenges has been staff migration. No matter how much we train them, many employees want to go abroad. Since our brand is strong, it often becomes a training ground for those looking to migrate. We also face challenges with import restrictions and skyrocketing ingredient prices, but we are committed to not compromising on the quality of our products.
Q: You hold a Bachelor of Commerce and an MBA. How have these qualifications shaped your leadership style and impacted the growth of Java Lounge?
A:I earned my MBA in the US, and while it provided a wealth of knowledge, most of the skills I’ve gained have come from hands-on experience. Building a brand like Java Lounge from the ground up took more than just academic knowledge. I must also mention that my husband, Dulith Herath, who is also an entrepreneur, has been a great source of inspiration and support.
Q: Java Lounge and Kapruka Holdings PLC are both massive brands in Sri Lanka. How do you manage these two major responsibilities?
A: Kapruka is a publicly listed company, and I am honoured to serve on the board alongside experienced members. The corporate discipline and best practices I learn there are valuable for Java Lounge. I spend about 80% of my time on Java Lounge and 20% on Kapruka , so there isn’t much of a balance as my focus remains on Java Lounge.
Q: As the founder of Java Lounge, it must be difficult to divide your focus. What is your vision for the future of both brands?
A: Kapruka is moving forward in its own direction, while my vision for Java Lounge is to expand into untapped markets such as Jaffna and Trincomalee. I also hope to take this homegrown brand to global markets.
Q: You’ve been involved in various charitable initiatives and served as the chairperson of the ladies’ chapter at Chamber Of Young Lankan Entrepreneurs ( COYLE). How do you view the role of entrepreneurship in CSR projects?
A: As a female entrepreneur, I enjoy inspiring and supporting other women entrepreneurs in any way I can. I am proud to say that 80% of the back-office staff at Java Lounge are women, and I take great joy in helping them achieve their dreams.
Q: Java Lounge is known for its quality, innovation, and customer satisfaction. How do you ensure these values remain at the core of your business?
A: We take customer feedback very seriously and continuously adapt to their needs. For example, we recently introduced almond and soy milk options due to customer demand. We also offer decaffeinated coffee, sugar-free chocolates, and cakes to cater to a wide range of preferences.
Q: We’ve heard you’re planning to open a new outlet soon, which is very exciting. Could you share some of your other future plans?
A: We are now expanding into sub-brands. Our latest venture is Java Lounge Chocolate Heaven, which specialises in handcrafted chocolates that can be personalised. Any outlet with extra space now includes a Java Chocolate Heaven section.
Q: You’ve won numerous awards, including ‘Woman Entrepreneur of the Year’ for the Western Province from the Women’s Chamber of Commerce and ‘Woman Entrepreneur of the Year 2022’ from Women in Management. What advice would you give to future entrepreneurs in Sri Lanka?
A: Get an idea and start building it. Don’t delay.
Q: Taking that first step can be intimidating. What advice would you give to young entrepreneurs who are hesitant to take the leap?
A: My advice to young people is simple: get off the phone and focus on what you want to do. Start a business—start somewhere.
Q: That’s great advice! What is the best piece of advice you’ve received in your journey?
A: As I mentioned earlier, I have an entrepreneurial mentor right in my house—my husband. The best advice I’ve received is to enjoy what you do. I’ve seen him face challenges with enthusiasm and love for his work, and I strive to do the same.
Q: Is it ‘love what you do’ or ‘do what you love’?
A: It can go both ways—love what you do, and do what you love.
