Nobel laureate Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning, has warned about the dangers of the very technology he helped advance.
After winning the Nobel Prize in Physics, Hinton compared AI’s impact to the Industrial Revolution, highlighting that AI’s superiority lies in intellectual, rather than physical, abilities. In an interview with CNN’s Meg Tirrell, Hinton cautioned that humanity lacks experience in dealing with entities smarter than us. Known as the “godfather” of AI, Hinton resigned from Google to raise awareness about these risks.
While he acknowledges AI’s potential to revolutionise industries like healthcare, he stresses the possibility of it spiralling out of control, leading to systems more intelligent than humans assuming control. Hinton joins a group of Nobel laureates who, as CNN reports, have raised alarms about the unintended consequences of their groundbreaking innovations.
