Lord Patten of Barnes Announces Retirement as Chancellor of Oxford University

Christopher Patten, also known as Lord Patten of Barnes, has declared his intention to retire as Chancellor of the University of Oxford by the conclusion of the 2023-24 academic year, a role he has held since March 2003.

In a statement, Lord Patten explained his decision, citing his upcoming 80th birthday in May and the uncertainties surrounding his health, which necessitate regular medical attention. He believes stepping down at this juncture would allow the University to plan for a smooth transition in leadership that aligns with the challenges and opportunities of the current decade.

Expressing a deep attachment to Oxford University, Lord Patten emphasized its profound influence on his life, not only during his time as a student but also in shaping his ongoing connection to the institution. Despite his decision to retire as Chancellor, he remains committed to supporting Oxford University whenever possible.
