Bicycling Bliss: Utrecht Crowned World’s Most Bicycle-Friendly City

Published on

The Global Bicycle Cities Index 2022, compiled by digital insurance company Luko, crowned Utrecht as the world’s most bicycle-friendly city among 90 global cities.

Assessing six indicators—weather, bicycle usage, crime & safety, infrastructure, bike-sharing opportunities, and awareness events—the study used a scale of 0 to 100, with higher scores indicating better bicycle-friendliness.

European cities dominated the top 10, with Hangzhou (China) being the only non-European entry. Notably, no American cities secured a place in the top 10, with San Francisco as the highest-ranked U.S. city at 39th.

This reflects the distinct biking culture entrenched in European cities compared to their U.S. counterparts, where cycling for everyday transportation isn’t as ingrained.
