Macktiles Lanka (Pvt) Limited has announced the successful production of its first batch of glaze frits manufactured entirely in Sri Lanka, describing the achievement as a first for the country.
The milestone represents a step towards replacing an imported raw material with local production, supporting the company’s ambition to strengthen domestic manufacturing capabilities and reduce reliance on overseas supplies.
Macktiles credited its research and development and production teams for the achievement, recognising Ahmed Shafee, Shimmer Milfer, Amaani Mizver, Imran Issadeen, Aaqil Farhaz and Chamil Gunathilaka, alongside the wider workforce involved in the initiative.
The company said the breakthrough reflected its commitment to unlocking the potential of Sri Lanka’s mineral resources through research, innovation, technology and advanced manufacturing.
Its announcement emphasised that possessing natural resources alone was insufficient, highlighting the importance of developing the expertise and industrial capacity needed to transform those resources into products capable of competing internationally.
For Macktiles, the initiative forms part of a mission extending beyond tile production. The company identified building national capabilities, empowering Sri Lankan talent and adding lasting domestic value as central priorities.
The achievement also highlights the contribution of technical teams to developing domestic alternatives for industrial materials.
Macktiles reaffirmed its ambition to combine Sri Lankan innovation and manufacturing with global competitiveness, presenting the first batch as a foundation for further industrial progress.
