Pan Asia Bank has provided partial financing for a pioneering battery energy storage project commissioned in Galle, adding a new capability to Sri Lanka’s electricity infrastructure.
The 10 MW/40 MWh facility was developed by Galilee BESS Ltd., involving WKV Hydro Technics Ltd. and Singapore’s Khen Energy Ltd. The project combines local expertise with international collaboration.
Pan Asia Bank Director and Chief Executive Officer Naleen Edirisinghe welcomed the commissioning, describing such investments as important to the country’s evolving energy infrastructure. He reaffirmed the bank’s support for businesses developing new solutions and creating lasting national value.
Assistant General Manager, Branch Credit, Amal Alles said the facility demonstrated the potential for innovative energy investments in Sri Lanka and highlighted the bank’s financing support.
Battery storage captures electricity for later use, helping balance supply and demand. Such systems can release stored power when demand rises or generation falls, supporting a more flexible and reliable electricity network.
Storage is particularly relevant as power systems incorporate more solar and wind generation, whose output varies with weather conditions. It enables electricity produced at one time to be used when it is needed, rather than requiring generation and consumption to coincide.
For businesses and communities, the wider significance lies in strengthening the infrastructure that supports dependable electricity delivery. However, individual project benefits depend on how facilities are operated and integrated into the network.
Pan Asia Bank said its involvement reflects a growing emphasis on sustainable and responsible financing, directing capital towards infrastructure that supports Sri Lanka’s economic development.
