New Chinese Ambassador Wei Huaxiang Arrives in Sri Lanka, Pledges Stronger Bilateral Ties

Published on

China’s newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Sri Lanka, H.E. Wei Huaxiang, has arrived in the country to assume his diplomatic duties, pledging to deepen the longstanding friendship and expand mutually beneficial cooperation between China and Sri Lanka.

Delivering a written address upon his arrival, Ambassador Wei described his appointment by Chinese President Xi Jinping as a great honour and privilege, while expressing admiration for Sri Lanka’s civilisation, natural beauty and people.

Highlighting the deep historical foundations of China Sri Lanka relations, Ambassador Wei recalled links dating back to ancient maritime trade and the Silk Road. He also recognised the historic Rubber Rice Pact, signed more than seven decades ago, as an enduring example of solidarity and mutual support between the two nations.

Ambassador Wei noted that bilateral relations have continued to strengthen since diplomatic ties were established, supported by cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and engagement across areas including education and water technology. He also highlighted high level exchanges involving President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya during their visits to China in 2025.

Looking ahead, Ambassador Wei pledged to strengthen the alignment of development strategies, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and deepen the strategic cooperative partnership.

The diplomatic relationship is approaching important milestones, with 2027 marking the 70th anniversary of China Sri Lanka diplomatic relations and the 75th anniversary of the Rubber Rice Pact. Ambassador Wei said he would work with stakeholders in both countries towards a stronger future for bilateral relations.
