Bank of Maldives CEO and Managing Director Mohamed Shareef has been appointed Chairman of the Asian Bankers Association (ABA), becoming the first Maldivian to hold the prestigious position. His appointment, approved by the ABA Board under the Association’s Charter, took effect on 31 July 2026.
Shareef previously served as ABA Vice Chairman from 2018 to 2020, playing a key role in advancing the Association’s strategic priorities and strengthening cooperation among member banks across Asia. His reappointment as Vice Chairman in 2025 reflected the confidence placed in his leadership by regional banking peers.
The appointment marks a significant achievement for both Bank of Maldives and the Maldives, reinforcing the country’s growing influence within the Asian financial sector.
