Dr C. Amarasekara has been appointed as the Senior Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, marking another significant milestone in a distinguished career spanning more than 23 years at the country’s apex financial institution.
Before assuming his new responsibilities, Dr Amarasekara served as Deputy Governor, Assistant Governor and Secretary to the Monetary Policy Board. Between January 2022 and February 2024, he represented Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh and Bhutan at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC as the Alternate Executive Director, further strengthening his international policy experience.
Prior to his IMF assignment, he served as Director of Economic Research, where he played a pivotal role in advancing monetary policy research and economic analysis. His scholarly work on monetary policy and central banking has been published in leading international and local journals and continues to be widely recognised by academics and policymakers.
Dr Amarasekara currently serves as Chairman of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and is a member of the Insurance Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka. He also serves on the Executive Committee of the South East Asian Central Banks Centre and has previously contributed to the governance of the Institute of Policy Studies, the Hector Kobbekaduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute and the Sri Lanka Export Credit Insurance Corporation.
A respected academic, he has volunteered as a guest lecturer, examiner and resource person at universities and professional institutions across Sri Lanka.
Dr Amarasekara holds a PhD in Economics and a Master of Science in Economics with Distinction from the University of Manchester, together with a First Class Honours Degree in Economics from the University of Peradeniya. He is also an Attorney at Law.
